Co-Sponsored Bill Calls for Government to Allow CBD in Dietary Supplements
- A co-sponsored bill was filed in the House of Representatives last week that would allow CBD to be added to dietary supplements.
- The bill is sponsored by Rep. Kurt Schrader (D-OR-5) and co-sponsored by Rep. Morgan Griffith (D-VA-9).
- As laws currently stand, the sale and use of CBD is legal unless it’s added to dietary supplements including foods and beverages.
U.S. Congressman Kurt Schrader is sponsoring a bill that, if approved, would allow for the inclusion of CBD into dietary supplements. As it stands now, it’s federally illegal to sell and/or market CBD-infused food and beverages.
The bill, filed as H.R. 8179, is co-sponsored by Rep. Morgan Griffith and is known as the “Hemp and Hemp-Derived CBD Consumer Protection and Market Stabilization Act of 2020.”
“Hemp was historically an important crop for Virginia farmers, and dietary supplements made from it do not possess dangerous addictive qualities,” Rep. Griffith stated.
“Nevertheless, the current state of regulation creates confusion about its legal uses. I joined this bipartisan bill to provide certainty for hemp farmers that their crop may find legal uses.”
Hemp Farmers Need Action Too
While congressmen are urging the government to allow CBD into dietary supplements, other government officials have been attempting to get the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) to delay the final hemp ruling.
Around a month ago, U.S. Senator Chuck Schumer urged federal agriculture officials to push back the final hemp ruling until 2022. Along with economic concerns from the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, the new rulings are set to create financial devastation for hemp farmers across the country.
For the sake of both the hemp and CBD industry, along with their products, let’s hope that the voices of these government officials are heard. There are many more obstacles that both industries must overcome, making the cooperation of the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and USDA vital to their success.
