FDA Hiring Contractor to Help Collect CBD Samples

Collecting Samples in Lab
  • The U.S. Food and Drug Administration is looking to hire a contractor to help collect and analyze CBD samples across the entire U.S. market.
  • The selected person will be collecting between 1,000 to 3,000 samples, with a heavy focus on food and cosmetic products.
  • Along with testing for CBD levels, the contractor will look for potential contaminants.
  • The new position was created to help the FDA finalize regulations for the CBD industry.

In their continued effort to provide clear insight and regulations for the CBD industry, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) is looking to hire a contractor who will help them to collect and assess CBD products around the country.

The contractor, once employed, will support the FDA Cannabidiol Policy Working Group’s effort to study CBD products currently on the U.S. market to help them “understand CBD and related cannabinoid content, and possible contaminants, in a range of products.”

According to the FDA, the selected contractor will be responsible for collecting and analyzing 1,000 to 3,000 samples from the CBD market.

As stated in the contract description, food and cosmetic products will be the priority; with a big focus on packaged and processed foods that contain CBD. This includes:

  • Candy
  • Baked goods
  • Beverages
  • Water
  • Oils and/or tinctures intended to be added to human and pet foods

“The purpose of these studies will be to develop a better understanding of the quantities of CBD and associated cannabinoids and their distribution,” the FDA wrote.

Potential associated contaminants will also be looked at by the contractor, with a focus on:

  • Industrial chemicals
  • Pesticides
  • Toxic elements
  • Processing solvents
  • Microbial contaminants

“The analytical methodology for this contract will be defined by the FDA and will include methods based on widely available and recognized methodology.”
