NORML Warns People About False Claims Regarding CBD and Coronavirus

Caution
  • A marijuana lobby group warned consumers about predatory retailers making false claims.
  • The claims that are being made suggest that CBD use can prevent you from becoming infected with the coronavirus.
  • The FDA has sent out warning letters to retailers known for making such claims.

The National Organization for the Reform of Marijuana Laws (NORML) stated that the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has been sending out warning letters to CBD retailers who are making false claims about CBD’s effectiveness in preventing coronavirus.

“If something sounds too good to be true, it likely is,” NORML’s executive director Erik Altieri stated.

The research on CBD and its health benefits is still young, so there is simply no research in existence that would suggest that CBD could be effective in preventing and treating symptoms of coronavirus. For obvious reasons, a lot more testing would need to be conducted in order to make any legitimate claims.

“During these difficult times, we encourage people to be skeptical of any unsubstantiated claims, particularly those circulating online, surrounding the use of cannabis or any other uncorroborated treatment for COVID-19,” Altieri added.

During times of mass panic, such is the case with the coronavirus, many predatory retailers will attempt to prey on consumers who are fearful and likely to believe the first thing they see. However, this “marketing tactic” is illegal and can potentially cause a company to shut down depending on the severity.

The warning letters that the FDA is sending out should be effective at stopping these companies from making such absurd claims.

Conclusion

Be wary of any company making claims similar to these. If you do happen to stumble across one, be sure to report it to help fight off predatory retailers during this time of global hardship.

Aside from CBD’s potential to improve your immune system and help you stay healthy, there is no evidence to suggest that using CBD will help you to prevent the contraction of the coronavirus.
