A bill was approved on Tuesday by a New Hampshire House committee that would recreationally legalize marijuana usage for adults over the age of 21.

This legislation would allow adults to possess and gift up to 3/4 of an ounce of cannabis and would allow them to grow up to six plants. This would be a similar structure to New Hampshire’s neighboring state, Vermont.

The Public Safety and Criminal Justice committees approved the bill with a 13-7 vote.

Prior to the vote, Chairman Renny Cushing stated:

“I think that the legalization of cannabis is more popular than the legislature itself or the governor or any other political entity in the state of New Hampshire.”

This vote comes only a week after the panel reviewed the proposal as supporters and shareholders showed their approval of the reform.

“This is something that the people of the state of New Hampshire want. They don’t want to be treated like they’re criminals if they have a plant,” Cushing said.

The Northeast has seen an increase of legislative activity in recent years, such as Vermont legalizing marijuana in 2018, so the news that New Hampshire is ready to legalize next comes as no surprise.

Matt Simon, New England political director for the Marijuana Policy Project, stated in a press release:

“Now that New Hampshire is literally surrounded by jurisdictions where cannabis is legal for adults, our current policies can no longer be justified in any way.”

The full House of Representatives is expected to make a full floor vote on February 6th.

Wrapping Up

This bill is likely one of many that the United States will see this year. With growing support for marijuana products that contain both THC and CBD, 2020 could be a big year for the cannabis industry.
