Former NFL Players Speak Out on CBD Use Following New MLB Cannabis Policy

  • Former NFL players advocate for CBD after policy change allows MLB players to use cannabis.
  • The NFL currently prohibits all forms of cannabinoids.
  • NFL players can receive suspensions from the league for the use of CBD.

In December of last year, Major League Baseball (MLB) removed cannabinoids from its list of banned substances, allowing all MLB players to use both CBD and THC products freely. This decision, which was made to help combat the growing number of opioid users, went over very well and has caught the attention of many former and current professional sports players.

One league in particular, the National Football League (NFL), has had several former players speak out and urge the league to follow in the footsteps of the MLB. After all, football is a high-contact sport that results in many different injuries for its players.

The NFL currently has firm restrictions on the use of cannabis products, and hands out several suspensions each year for its use.

Former Players Speak Out

According to the NFL, “everything is under consideration” when it comes to alternative treatments for pain. Dr. Allen Sills, the Chief Medical Officer of the NFL, stated:

“If we are going to recommend or approve any kind of therapy for NFL players, again, whether it’s equipment or treatment or intervention, we’d have to pass an extremely high standard of proof.”

While it’s completely understandable to want to keep your players safe by restricting dangerous substances, many NFL veterans believe that the decision to use CBD should be in the hands of the players.

Rob Gronkowski

Rob Gronkowski is a three-time Super Bowl champion who formerly played with the New England Patriots. After retirement, Gronkowski partnered with the topical medication firm Abacus Health.

“”It’s not going to do miracle work and heal your injuries like that but I believe it will help give you a relief,” said Gronkowski. “Especially in football, you’re always getting muscle tissue damage from all the hits.”

During his career, Gronkowski underwent surgeries for his ankle, forearm, back, and ACL/MCL.

“”With the MLB lifting its ban, it’s just a fantastic start, and it would be wonderful to see like NFL and other major sports organizations to start following the lead of the MLB and lifting up that ban.”

Terrell Davis

Terrell Davis is a Hall of Fame running back who won two consecutive Super Bowls with the Denver Broncos. After a devastating knee injury, Davis retired at the age of 29.

Last May, Davis co-founded a sports drink, known as DEFY, that is infused with CBD.

“The landscape around all professional sports is sort of leaning that way,” said Davis in regard to the MLB’s league policy change on cannabis. “Now how fast the NFL gets there, I’m not sure.”

Davis said that adopting a policy similar to that of the MLB would improve players’ quality of life.

“The bottom line is just to give players a choice. To be able to say, ‘hey, you’re not forced to take just one kind of anti-inflammatory.”

Lofa Tatupu

Lofa Tatupu is a three-time Pro Bowl linebacker who spent six seasons with the Seattle Seahawks where he endured countless injuries and underwent 10 surgeries. After he retired in 2013, Tatupu began using CBD. In 2019, he co-founded the Washington-based ZoneIn CBD.

“The wear and tear is still there. It didn’t mask the pain, it helped me deal with it directly and work through it,” Tatupu said.

I hope the NFL and NFLPA listen to us, in terms of how much it’s fixed or repaired the trauma that we’ve experienced from our career.”

Wrapping Up

It is very encouraging to see former NFL players getting behind the cause and advocating for the use of CBD. With the MLB taking it a step further and allowing their players to use any form of cannabinoid, it should only be a matter of time before we see the NFL adapt and allow some form of cannabis use.
